THURSDAYS 5:30-7:30pm: 4/3, 4/10, 4/17, 4/24, 5/8, 5/15
Pottery 301: Mugs is an advanced level course for intermediate-experienced potters. In this 6-week class, students will create a custom mug set while learning about the features and functions of well-made ceramic mugs.
This course is more than just slapping a handle on a cylinder! We’ll discuss and practice the intricacies involved in crafting your new favorite mug, including calculating shrinkage to ensure the ideal finished size, creating a well balanced handle, and elevated surface decoration. When it comes to the best mug in your kitchen, it’s all about the details!
Course curriculum
Week 1: Anatomy of a mug lesson and guided throwing time
Week 2: Guided throwing time: mug bodies
Week 3: Making handles 4 ways demo and guided work time
Week 4: Guided work time: trimming pieces and adding handles
Week 5: Glazing and surface decoration
Week 6: Coffee and critique
Prerequisite: Before joining us for pottery 301 all students must complete Pottery 201 prior to the first day of class or meet the skill requirement below.
Skill requirement: Successfully throw 4 one-pound straight-walled cylinders (approximately 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall) out of 6 attempts.
